Description:
Gabions are baskets manufactured from 8x10 double twisted hexagonal woven steel wire mesh, as per ASTM A975-97 Gabions are filled with stones at the project site to form flexible, permeable, monolithic structures such as retaining walls, channel linings, and weirs for erosion control projects. The steel wire used in the manufacture of the Gabion is heavily Galfan (zinc-5% aluminum-mischmetal [Zn-5 Al-MM] alloy) coated soft temper steel. A PVC coating is then applied to provide additional protection for use in polluted, contaminated or aggressive environments: in salt, fresh water, acid soil or wherever the risk of corrosion is present. The PVC coating has a nominal thickness of 0.02 in. (0.50 mm). The Gabion is divided into cells by diaphragms positioned at approximately 3 ft (0.9m) centers. To reinforce the structure, all mesh panel edges are selvedged with a wire having a greater diameter. Gabions shall be manufactured and shipped with all components mechanically connected at the production facility.
Woven gabion mesh can be used for slope protection, mesh shotcrete on mountain rock surface, protection of slope green plants, isolation and protection of railway and expressway. It can also be made into box cages and mesh mats, which can be used for erosion protection of rivers, dams, etc., as well as cage for reservoir and river closure. The most serious disaster of the river is that the river bank is damaged by water scouring, which leads to flooding, causing a lot of loss of life and property and a lot of water and soil loss. Therefore, when dealing with the above problems, the application of woven gabion mesh becomes one of the best solutions, which can protect the river bed and banks for a long time.

All tests on wire must be performed prior to manufacturing the mesh. All wire should comply with ASTM A975-97, style 3 coating, Galfan and PVC coated steel wire. Wire used for the manufacture of Gabions and the lacing wire, shall have a maximum tensile strength of 75 000 psi (515 MPa) as per ASTM A856-03, soft temper steel.

How to install welded gabion box?
1. Ends, diaphragms, front and back panels are placed upright on the bottom section of wire mesh.
2. Secure panels by screwing spiral binders through the mesh openings in adjacent panels.
3. Stiffeners shall be placed across the corners, at 300mm from the corner. Providing a diagonal bracing, and crimped over the line and cross wires on the front and side faces. None are needed in interior cells.
4. Gabion box filled with graded stone by hand or with a shovel.
5. After filling, close the lid and secure with spiral binders at the diaphragms, ends, front and back.
6. When stacking tiers of the welded gabion box, the lid of the lower tier may serve as the base of the upper tier. Secure with spiral binders and add pre-formed stiffeners to exterior cells before filling with graded stones.

Welded gabion box is widely used in retaining wall structures, rockfall and soil protection and so on. Welded gabions are filled on site with hard and durable stone to form mass gravity structures. And welded gabions are quicker and simpler to install than woven mesh gabions.
